So theres new news out that Mercedes and Infiniti are developing ANOTHER platform together. Its expected to be a mid range platform that will underpin the next gen QX70 and ML. Considering the QX70 and QX50 already share the FM platform donated by the G37 its entirely possible we see QX50 migrate to this platform as well. The only caveat is the platform is not expected until 2017.

so maybe not...

It would make sense for it to switch platforms but I hope that it won't take until 2017. Given what is at the top of the list for Infiniti right now, I think that the QX50 might not be updated till at least 2016 though.

how would a new architecture change the QX50's design? Would it be a radical shift?

I hope so too.
We'll have to wait on some official info to release from them on their plans for the future, giving us a better outline.

I'm not sure if Benz and Infiniti would work together on a performance model. Right now Benz has a big leg up in that department so working with Infiniti would do more for Infiniti than it would for Benz in my estimation.

A new engine is more of a possibility though, and that could be a great investment for Infiniti.

Between its partnership with Renault and its deals with Mercedes, Nissan/Infiniti is already working with other automakers a lot. I just wonder what limit there is on how much they will work together. At a certain point you have to say no, because at the end of the day it is a competition. Every man for himself.

They are too long to fit in most cars

That is why they moved to V configuration. They are more compact. And you still get 6 cylinders.
No they moved to V configuration because it makes the engine more modular. a V can be mounted transverse or longitudinal meaning you can share across a lineup. Where as a flat 6 only works longitudinal. But considering Infiniti only makes RWD products, (like a certain german who makes copious use of a flat 6) It could be an interesting avenue to explore. Although I too doubt it :(

Flats have the befit of being inherently balanced.

It depends.
Not sure what their blocks are made out of, if it's aluminum or not. Assuming it's the same type of metal, then weight should come close, close enough to not make much of a difference, nothing noticeable.
