Why buy one over the other? What are their pros and cons?

I've heard mixed opinions on the design of the Q30, some hate it, some love it. The QX50 will do a better job at pulling off the new design language than the Q30 did here. One of the reasons I think people will get it over the Q30
We haven't seen the new QX50 though.. So it's hard to say.

I'd like to see the specs compared. Even of the existing QX50.
its hard to say right now when we haven't seen it or anything on it.
it's probably best we wait to see the new QX50.
who knows, with the both of them being compared, some people who originally thought they needed a QX50 might be able to get by with a Q30
I think that most of the differences between the two vehicles will be aesthetic. One rides higher, one is more of a CUV, etc... It really will come down to what Infiniti ends up doing with the design of the QX50. I feel like the QX50 and Q30 will be the same car in different packages.
the difference is going to be the platform. Q30 is going to ride on the shared MFA platform with Mercedes. This is a small, FWD, 4 cylinder application. While QX50 rides on the larger FM platform shared with the Q50, 370Z and QX70. This is a higher performance, RWD application that deserves a V6 or Turbo 4... at least next gen...

dynamics wise the two will be completely different beasts.
So could we see a V6 or turbo 4 QX50 in the future :D

We might even see the QX50 grow a bit since there is apparently a QX30 now.

thats very possible, they cant have 2 vehicle that in the end serve the same purpose, just wont make sense. even if it extends by a few inches it will be different enough.

Best way to put it, they really are two very different vehicles but I know people will cross shop them since depending how you price the Q30 you might start stepping into QX50 pricing
I could see a turbo 4 happening but where will they source that engine from is my question. The only thing I could think of at the moment is from mercedes turbo 4 in the CLA 45 AMG.

They can but I don't know if Mercedes would be willing to do that, it's their Gem. Im sure this whole ordeal is limited somewhere, Infiniti might be on it's own for this one.
doubt we will see the cla amg engine in any infiniti to be honest.
Probably just end up with renault engine anyways ;)

haha 3 cylinder 1.0 Liter engine, yeah sure, that should get us a 0-60 of 20 seconds at best.
infiniti has their own V6. its got enough power.

they are short on a powerful turbocharged 4 cylinder. but I think they have what it take to develop their own.
if they really want to they can trickle down some GT-R V6 tech to a 4 cylinder to make something that can rival a powerful boxer engine quite nicely. I can see it happening.
no its entirely possible that Infiniti gets a Mercedes 4. Just not the AMG beasty. It will likely be the M270 4 cyl already in the NA spec CLA. Nissan is building those at its engine facility in Tennessee... Or like was said above something sourced from Renault... FYI renault produces more engines than a 1.0 triple...
either way Infiniti has the resources and the know how to develop a 4 cylinder turbo if they wanted to. Wouldn't be a bad idea in the QX50

exactly

it's either they don't want to do it, or have something else to offer.
look at the FR-S and BRZ, there's a turbo version of the engine used in those cars but they dont want to throw it in.
